Origin[edit]

Known only from Rio Preto/Rio Marca catchment in Amapa, northern Brazil.

Sexing[edit]

Females will be more full in the belly than males.

Tank compatibility[edit]

A peaceful community fish that's best kept in shoals of 6-8 or more. Keep with other peaceful community fish, best not kept with slow-moving long-finned fish.

Diet[edit]

Will accept most foods including pellet and flake as well as live/frozen food such as daphnia and brine shrimp.

Feeding regime[edit]

Feed once or twice a day.

Environment specifics[edit]

Prefers a spacious tank with dense planting and hiding places as well as some open swimming space. Must have acidic softwater conditions.

Behaviour[edit]

A peaceful mid-swimming active shoaling fish.

Identification[edit]

This little tetra has a pale iridescent body with a bold red line from the gill plate to the caudal peduncle, it is underlined with a thinner white band and black band. The eye is also half red. The fins are generally colourless with a hint of yellow.
Can be mistaken for Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus, however H.amapaensis's black band under the red lateral band is much thinner than H.heterorhabdus.
